This is a very powerful exercise I learned from Bob Veres, the editor
of the newsletter "Inside Information". Not too long ago, I was at
a meeting in Chicago and Bob Veres asked a group of us to write down
30 of our goals and to identify 5 goals that we would like to complete
before our next meeting, which was three months away. I was able to
write down about 7 goals before it became very difficult. I guess
I had never thought about all the goals I might have for my life.
Well I did write down my 30 goals along with the five I thought
I might be able to complete before our next meeting. I also shared
my goals with a good friend before I left the meeting. Three months
later at our next meeting, I was absolutely amazed to realize that
I had completed 9 of the 30 goals I had written down and 4 of the
5 I thought I could accomplish before this meeting. The surprising
part was I hadn't really thought much about the list after I left
Chicago.
I was so excited with the results; I wrote another list of 30
goals including 5 more short-term goals. Once again I experienced
similar results.
May I suggest that you give it a try? Write down 30 life and financial
goals you "want" to accomplish. Write down Big goals and Small goals.
Try to have some goals in several areas: Financial, Personal, Career,
Fun, Adventure, Family, Health… Look for goals that bring a "Big
Smile" to your face when you write them down.
Examples:
1. Sail the seven seas
2. Drive cross-country
3. Change careers
4. Work 3 days a week
5. Retire early
6. Mentor a child
7. Write a book
8. Go back to school
9. Achieve financial independence
10. Join a group or club
11. Take an art class, singing class, acting class….
12. Play a great golf course
13. Buy a vacation or second home
14. Learn another language
15. Go on an awesome family vacation
16. Be a better father, mother, spouse, friend…
17. Volunteer
18. And----
You get the idea.
Don't forget that "Big Smile".
Just writing down your 30 goals is half of the secret. The other
half is sharing them with someone else. Share them with family,
friends, a mentor, a colleague, or your personal coach.
Promises (Goals) that you make to yourself are often like the
Japanese plum tree, they bear no fruit. Frances Marion.
I guarantee if you write down your 30 goals and then share them
with someone else, you to will be amazed at what you "will" accomplish.
